One dividend payout involves several dates, and they are easy to mix up. Here is the order they happen in.

The order of dates

  1. Announcement. The company tells the market how much dividend it will pay and sets the dates.
  2. XD date. The day you buy the stock and no longer receive this dividend. The last buy day is the trading day before.
  3. Record date. The company uses its shareholder list on this day to decide who is entitled. It matches the buyers who bought before the XD date.
  4. Payment date. The cash reaches your account. This is often several weeks after the XD date.

Common questions

Do I have to hold until the payment date?

No. Holding through the XD date is enough. If you sell after the XD date, you still receive that dividend.

Why hasn't the cash arrived even though XD has passed?

The XD date is not the payment date. Check the payment date the company announces; the money arrives on that day.

Will the amount match the announcement?

Usually not exactly. Companies withhold 10% tax at source before paying, so a THB 1,000 dividend arrives as THB 900. In some cases you can claim a tax credit back. See the dividend tax credit calculator (Thai).

Upcoming dates are on the XD calendar.
